On February-4-2022 I’ll be moderating a virtual book conversation with Jordan Schonig, author of the book The Shape of Motion: Cinema and the Aesthetics of Movement (2022), and Ryan Pierson, author of the book Figure and Force in Animation Aesthetics (2019). Click on “Continue” for description.
What resources do we have for describing the ways things move? How can we examine movements in cinema and animation in order to better articulate what we see? What’s at stake in describing what lies before us in images, rather than trying to explain what lies behind those images? Jordan Schonig will introduce the concept of the “motion form” in cinema, whereas Ryan Pierson will emphasize the interactions of figures and forces in animation.
The event is co-sponsored by Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) special interest groups in Film-Philosophy and Animation.
